LyondellBasell, a global chemical manufacturer, announced that the company reduced its annual Scope 3 emissions by approximately 40 million metric tons through the closure of a refinery.

During the first quarter of 2025, the company safely completed the shutdown of refining operations at its Houston refinery.

The company also announced its employee-driven Value Enhancement Program (VEP) initiative generated an estimated annual carbon emissions reduction of 310,000 metric tons.

In 2024, as a result of VEP and other projects, the company lowered Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 200,000 metric tons.

LyondellBasell signed several power purchase agreements (PPAs) in 2024 that will enable the company to meet its target of sourcing at least 50% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. As detailed in its 2024 Sustainability Report, the company signed agreements to obtain 1,820 MW of renewable energy capacity.

“At LYB, sustainability is an opportunity to reimagine the future and create long-term value,” said Peter Vanacker, CEO of LyondellBasell, in a statement. “As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to sustainability and innovation. Our investments in circular and low-carbon solutions, along with our dedication to safety and operational excellence, will drive our progress toward achieving our 2030 and 2050 goals.”
