NextEra Energy topped the list of Fortune’s “The World’s Most Admired Companies” among electric and gas utilities. Dominion Energy ranked second, with Sempra Energy, Xcel Energy, and Duke Energy rounding out the top five for this segment.
NextEra Energy has captured the top spot among electric and gas utilities a total of 11 times in the past 12 years. "As America's third-largest capital investor in infrastructure, we're investing billions of dollars annually while also creating thousands of jobs and providing our customers with affordable, reliable and clean energy," said Jim Robo, NextEra Energy’s chairman and CEO. "I'm pleased that our company continues to be recognized as a leader within our industry, as well as ranked among the top 20 companies worldwide for people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, long-term investment value and, in particular, innovation.”
In a statement, Lynn Good, Duke Energy's chairman, president and CEO said, "We are pleased and humbled to receive this recognition on behalf of our talented team of more than 29,000 employees who work every day delivering a smarter and cleaner energy future for our customers." She added, "We plan to continue to improve in all areas of our business and deliver even greater value to our customers in the years ahead." Duke Energy rose to fifth place from ninth on last year’s list.
The overall list was led by Apple, Amazon, and Alphabet. Fortune compiles the ranking on an annual basis. For this year’s version, approximately 3,900 executives, analysts, directors, and experts rated an array of companies across a total of nine attributes: innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment, quality of products/services and global competitiveness.
