Red Sox team up on wind project
The Boston Red Sox have partnered with an offshore wind energy company to enact sustainability projects at Fenway Park.
According to a report in Cape Cod Times, the Danish company Orsted, partnering with Eversource as Bay State Wind, announced the initiative on Mar. 8.
The partnership with Orsted will allow the Red Sox to explore more ways to use green energy, said Troup Parkinson, Red Sox executive vice president of partnerships. The Red Sox and Orsted expect to develop projects and events throughout the coming baseball season, The partnership will support the park’s annual Sustainability Day and will provide sustainability tips for their audience. The Fenway Farms initiative, which includes a rooftop garden where produce and herbs are grown for use in food served at the park, will also receive support through the partnership.
"We see this strategic partnership as part of our continued commitment to bringing green energy to Massachusetts," Orsted North America president Thomas Brostrom said. The company is bidding on other electricity contracts in Massachusetts as well.
Cape Cod Times reports that legislation in 2016 opened a path in Massachusetts for offshore wind energy companies to sell 1,600 megawatts of wind energy by 2027. In December, Bay State Wind, Deepwater Wind, and Vineyard Wind all submitted bids to the state Department of Energy Resources. An announcement of the bidders selected for negotiations will be made April 23.
