Bronx hospital plans energy efficiency project
Jacobi Medical Center, part of NYC’s Health + Hospitals Corporation, will implement an $11 million energy efficiency project that includes road lighting operated on solar-and wind-generated batteries that are completely off the power grid.
A report by Bronx Times said the two-phase energy efficiency renovation project of the facility’s lighting and physical plant will kick off with these new roadway lamps and will move on to “larger, significant energy efficiency projects around the hospital.” These projects include more energy efficient controls and lights inside hospital buildings, exterior lighting changes, upgrades to the hospital’s chiller plant (which produces cold air and air conditioning), minor boiler plant upgrades, and the repair and/or replacement of three to four air handling units in order to make them more energy efficient, and are expected to be completed by mid-2020.
“These energy efficient measures will have a definite impact on patient and staff well-being,” said Cyril Toussaint, director of energy management and sustainably for NYC’s Health + Hospitals corporation, adding, “Additionally, we will be working to reduce greenhouse emissions in New York City.”
New York City Health + Hospitals has set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2025, and also expects to meet the mayor’s goal of reducing emissions by 80% by 2050, according to Toussaint.
