BD reports progress on 2020 goals
BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a leading global medical technology company, reached a 75% reduction in GHG emissions in 2018 from a baseline year of 2008, normalized to cost of products sold, well ahead of its 2020 target of 50%. The company is close to its goal of using renewable energy to power 50% of total energy needs, reaching 45% in 2018. Energy consumption has been reduced by 32% on the way to the 2020 goal of 40%.
This progress was reported in BD’s 2018 Sustainability Report, focusing on the management of the environmental, social and governance factors that support the company's 2020 Sustainability Goals.
"BD's 2020 sustainability goals reflect our commitment to the role we play in finding solutions to complex global issues in partnership with our employees, customers, and stakeholders," said Vincent A. Forlenza, chairman and CEO. "We are pleased with the progress we have made toward our goals and believe there are opportunities ahead to make a real difference as we work to address global challenges such as climate change and antimicrobial resistance."
Highlighting progress on GHG emissions goals, the report noted that absolute Scope 1 emissions rose in FY2018, due in part to an increase in production, but also due to the use of propane and diesel generators at our facilities in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Scope 2 emissions continue to fall due to BD’s continued commitment to increasing resilience through on-site generation and use of renewable energy through on-site solar power and the purchase of RECs.
