Amazon plans three new solar projects in U.S, Spain
Amazon announced Dec. 3 three new renewable energy projects in the U.S. and Spain that will total 329 MW and 700,000 MWh, advancing the company toward its 2030 target of 100% renewable energy.
The largest of the three will be the retail giant’s first large-scale project in Spain and will total 149 MW of solar power located southeast of Seville.
The two U.S. solar projects will be located in Lee County, Ill., the first Amazon project in the state, and in Northern Virginia. Once completed, the two are expected to total 180 MW.
Amazon’s current renewable energy portfolio exceeds 70 projects worldwide with the capacity to generate more than 1,900 MW.
“Earlier this year, we announced The Climate Pledge, setting a goal to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net zero carbon by 2040,” Kara Hurst, Director of Sustainability at Amazon, said in a statement. “We also plan to run on 80% renewable energy by 2024 and 100% renewable energy by 2030. We’re committed to investing in renewable energy as a critical step toward addressing our carbon footprint globally.”
This announcement follows a similar one just in October of three new additional renewable energy projects Amazon would be pursuing in the U.S. and U.K.
