JetBlue moves to offset all domestic flight emissions
JetBlue committed Jan. 6 to offset all emissions that result from jet fuel used on all domestic flights by investing in carbon offsets projects, such as forest conservation, Landfill Gas Capture and solar and wind projects.
The airline expects the initiative to offset more than 15-17 billion pounds of carbon dioxide per year. JetBlue will continue working with Carbonfund.org, through which they have already offset more than 2.6 billion pounds of CO2 since 2008.
“Air travel connects people and cultures, and supports a global economy, yet we must act to limit this critical industry’s contributions to climate change,” Robin Hayes, chief executive officer of JetBlue, said in a statement. “We reduce where we can and offset where we can’t. By offsetting all of our domestic flying, we’re preparing our business for the lower-carbon economy that aviation – and all sectors – must plan for.”
JetBlue also announced today its plans to begin using sustainable aviation fuel in mid-2020 on flights from San Francisco International Airport. The company will purchase SAF from Neste, a producer of a jet fuel made 100% from waste and residue raw materials.
This announcement follows other initiatives over the past couple of years by the airline to decrease its carbon footprint. In September, JetBlue converted all baggage equipment at its JFK terminal to electric models and powered its first flight with a renewable jet fuel blend in September 2018.
Other efforts by the airline to reduce its climate change contribution includes the implementation of a more fuel-efficient aircraft into its fleet and the modernization of its Air Traffic Control system.
