City of Detroit launches building energy challenge
The City of Detroit launched Feb. 27 their Detroit Energy Challenge to encourage buildings in the city to commit to reducing emissions and improving efficiency.
The challenge is a collaboration between the City, Detroit 2030 District and the U.S. Green Building Council of West Michigan. The event was inspired by the success of the Michigan Battle of the Buildings that kicked off in 2014 and resulted in 233 million square feet of Michigan buildings avoiding 137,355 metric tons of carbon and saving $14.1 million over five years.
“The Detroit Energy Challenge is a great way for building owners to save operating expenses, foster healthier indoor environments for employees and residents, and to play an important part in reducing our emissions,” Joel Howrani Heeres, Director of Sustainability for the City of Detroit, said in a statement. “I would like to personally challenge all Detroit building owners to be a part of this exciting challenge!”
Participants of the challenge will track their energy and water use over a year using the EnergyStar Portfolio Manager and look for ways to reduce energy use through the implementation of efficiency upgrades to equipment or procedures. The buildings with the highest percentage energy reduction compared to their own individual baselines will be recognized at an award ceremony in Spring 2021 in Detroit.
Participants can also receive in-person support and consulting from the Detroit 2030 District to help with their energy reduction goals. Additionally, any buildings participating in the Michigan Battle of the Buildings will be automatically enrolled in the Detroit Energy Challenge.
