Neste commits to carbon neutrality by 2035 throughout sustainable fuel production
Neste, a global manufacturer of renewable diesel and biofuels, announced March 15 that they intend to be carbon neutral in their production by 2035 in line with the same target set by their home country, Finland.
To achieve this goal, Neste has identified more than 50 measures that they could roll out, including the adoption of renewable energy at their production sites. They recently agreed to use wind power for their production in Finland.
Additionally, they will focus on efficiency measures to optimize the use of fuel gas, electricity, hydrogen and steam in its production. These efforts will be implemented this year, in addition to emission reduction and carbon capture and storage projects, at their Porvoo refinery. The implementation of power optimization is expected to decrease emissions in the location’s production by more than 100 kt CO2eq annually.
“Neste’s purpose is to create a healthier planet for our children,” Peter Vanacker, President and CEO of Neste, said in a statement. “We do this by offering renewable and circular solutions to our customers. But what is more, we also need to commit to reducing the direct climate impact of our own activities. Therefore, we have set a concrete milestone to reach carbon neutral production by 2035. This is an enormous undertaking, one which will require new ways of thinking, innovation and plenty of cooperation,”
Neste will also be exploring new production materials that result in less emissions, like biogas or electrolysis for hydrogen production.
The company has also previously committed to lowering their customers’ greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tons annually by 2030. In order to reduce emissions associated with employee travel, Neste plans on partnering with aviation companies to supply sustainable aviation fuel, the first was which was confirmed with Finnair in March 2020.
