GCC to power S.D. cement plant with wind

Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC) will soon be powering 50% of their Rapid City, S.D., cement manufacturing plant with wind energy for the next 15 years through a new deal announced May 6.

The cement and concrete manufacturing company entered into a 15-year agreement with Black Hills Energy, who in 2020 will construct a wind farm to generate the power, through the utility’s Renewable Ready Program. The Corriedale Wind Energy Project, located in Cheyenne, Wyo., is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2021. The project will also generate electricity for other subscribers of Black Hills Energy’s Renewable Ready Program, which was designed for large commercial and industrial customers and governmental agencies in their service regions in South Dakota and Wyoming.

The clean energy provided to GCC is expected to reduce the CO2 emissions from their Rapid City Plant by about 50,000 metric tons a year.

“By choosing low-cost renewable energy resources to power our business, we’re able to advance our business goals and sustainability objectives while also supporting the expansion of affordable, renewable energy development in the region,” Ron Henley, GCC U.S. Division president, said in a statement. “Clean energy is good for the planet and good for our company.”
