New York school district advances second phase of energy installations

The Wappingers Central School District in New York began work Aug. 12 on the second phase of an energy infrastructure project that will include energy conservation measures at 14 buildings and 1.9 MW of solar panels at five buildings to reduce annual utility costs.

The school district partnered on this project with Ameresco, who is installing the upgrades. They completed phase one in 2013 and are financing the project with an ESPC. The district expects to save $8.4 million as a result of the upgrades over the course of its 18-year contract term.

“As one of the largest school districts in the State of New York, we believe that our energy infrastructure project can serve as a model for others that seek to update and upgrade their facilities,” Ron Broas, Director of Facilities and Operations for Wappingers Central School District, said in a statement. “We strive to create a comfortable learning environment for each of the more than 11,000 students enrolled at our schools and believe that the improvements made as a result of our work with Ameresco will further that aim.”

The project is expected to be completed in March 2021.
