ALDI Australia targets 100% RE by end of 2021
ALDI Australia announced Aug. 26 their commitment to sourcing 100% renewable electricity for their operations in the country by the end of 2021.
The Australian branch of the supermarket chain released this target following their success in reducing overall operational emissions intensity by 40% from a 2012 baseline. ALDI Australia plans to achieve their renewable energy target through their solar installation program and the recent completion of two 10-year PPAs with a wind farm in the New South Wales Southern Tablelands (with RATCH) and in Western Victoria (with Tilt Renewables). These two wind farms are expected to generate over 180,000 MWh of electricity and avoid 160,000 tons of carbon emissions every year while providing power to all of ALDI’s New South Wales and Victorian stores.
“We are proud to have built a reputation for providing customers with high quality products and an affordable shopping experience,” CEO Tom Daunt said in a statement. “As we continue our journey in Australia, we want to reassure our shoppers that how we conduct business is equally important as the value we offer.”
ALDI’s solar installation program will include the installation of 102,000 panels on over 250 Australia stores and six distribution centers. The program will allow the company to generate more than 15% of their total energy use from solar and offset 41,000 tons of carbon emissions each year.
ALDI Australia has also implemented other energy efficiency projects at its stores, like LED lighting, energy-efficient chillers and upgrading to natural refrigerants.
