Microsoft and bp team up on energy solutions innovation
Microsoft Corp. announced Sept. 15 a new partnership with bp to develop digital solutions for energy systems that advance both companies’ net zero carbon goals.
A key part of this partnership is the continued use of Microsoft Azure, a cloud-based solution that bp uses for their infrastructure. In return, bp supplies renewable energy to Microsoft in support of their 2025 goals.
In particular, the two companies outlined a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that said their collaboration will focus on four areas of innovation: identifying areas for strategic collaboration on smart and clean city initiatives, developing clean energy parks, exploring ways to empower consumers to reduce home energy use and carbon emissions and delivering industrial Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for bp’s production and operation facilities.
“bp shares our vision for a net zero carbon future, and we are committed to working together to drive reductions in carbon emissions and fulfill demand with new renewable energy sources,” Judson Althoff, executive vice president of Microsoft’s Worldwide Commercial Business, said in a statement. “A strategic partnership such as this enables each organization to bring its unique expertise for industry-leading change and the potential to positively impact billions of lives around the world.”
bp has plans to be net zero by 2050 and to develop around 50 GW of net renewable energy capacity by the end of 2030. Microsoft is also pursuing carbon negativity by 2030 and removing more carbon than they have emitted since their founding by 2050.
