AT&T to go carbon neutral by 2030
AT&T announced Sept. 17 that they are committed to being carbon neutral by 2035 and that they will be expanding their Climate Change Analysis Tool across the contiguous United States to identify the potential impact of climate change on the network and operations.
In order to achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions, the telecommunications company will focus on six key areas: virtualization of network functions, transitioning to a low-emissions fleet, accelerating energy efficiency efforts, expanding sustainable feature film and TV production (through WarnerMedia), supporting the development of renewable energy and investing in carbon offsets to cover unavoidable emissions.
AT&T plans to focus on entering into PPAs with renewable energy developers to cut emissions, decrease energy spending and help add more clean power to the country’s grid. A particular concern of these initiatives will be analyzing the effect that climate change has on their network as communications infrastructure and operations are affected by climate-related severe weather events, like hurricanes and flooding.
“Our network is tested by climate change and natural disasters every year,” John Stankey, AT&T chief executive officer, said in a statement. “We recognize the long-term impact these commitments can have, and we owe it to the millions of customers who rely on our services to create the most resilient and sustainable business we can.”
