Amazon reveals first custom electric delivery vehicle
Amazon announced Oct. 8 its first custom electric vehicle, designed in pursuit of its 2040 goal to have 10,000 custom electric delivery vehicles on the road worldwide by 2022 and 100,000 by 2030.
The electric van is one of three different models designed and built in partnership with Rivian. The vehicles feature state-of-the-art design like highway and traffic assist technology, exterior cameras around the vehicle, Alexa integration and brighter tail lights.
“When we set out to create our first customized electric delivery vehicle with Rivian, we knew that it needed to far surpass any other delivery vehicle,” Ross Rachey, Director of Amazon's Global Fleet and Products, said in a statement. “We wanted drivers to love using it and customers to feel excited when they saw it driving through their neighborhood and pulling up to their home. We combined Rivian’s technology with our delivery logistics knowledge, and the result is what you see here-the future of last mile delivery.”
The team hopes that this new model will help speed the rate of innovation in the electric vehicle sector for company fleets. Amazon and Rivian have previously worked together to get electric vehicles into Amazon’s fleet, but this is the first custom model made for the company.
Amazon plans to add 1,800 electric vehicles to its delivery fleet in Europe this year and 10,000 electric delivery vehicles to its fleet in India. The company also uses e-cargo bikes for deliveries in some urban areas in Europe and New York City.
