Kohl’s Reaches 2025 Energy Efficiency and Emissions Goals - 4 Years Early
Kohl’s announced on April 22 that it has already achieved or exceeded its 2025 energy use and emissions targets. These goals included lowering Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from Kohl’s-owned operations by 50% (compared to 2014) and reducing its facilities’ energy consumption by 30% (compared to 2008). As of April 2021, the retail brand has reached 50% emissions reduction since 2014 and uses 39% less energy than in 2008 - exceeding its energy efficiency goal by 9%.
Kohl’s newly released Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report includes this progress in addition to other clean energy achievements. For instance, the report notes that the company now has 164 solar and wind locations and 101 electric vehicle charging stations. In addition, 80% of Kohl’s facilities have completed the Higg Index Environmental Module, an analysis of the facility’s environmental impact that enables them to make more sustainable choices.
2020 also saw Kohl’s install LED lights in over 45 stores, saving over 10 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year. The report shares that over 90% of its stores are now ENERGY STAR® certified.
“We continued to illustrate our commitment to the greater good through all of our ESG efforts, including our widely-recognized environmental initiatives and our philanthropic support in communities nationwide,” says Michelle Gass, Kohl’s chief executive officer, in a statement. “It is our privilege and honor to share our 2020 ESG report outlining our ongoing progress.”
