HP Hood Inks Deal for 25 MW of Wind
HP Hood announced June 16 that it completed an agreement for 25 MW of wind energy to supply 33% of its annual energy use.
The dairy product manufacturer entered into the 12-year VPPA with Enel Green Power for its 350 MW Azure Sky Wind project in Texas. The agreement represent’s Hood’s first renewable energy VPPA and should provide 90 GWh of electricity annually, the equivalent of 33% of its energy use across all 13 manufacturing facilities in 2020.
“At Hood, sustainability means evolving and developing our business for the long-term. This VPPA is an important investment in our future and a significant step in reducing our climate impact,” Gary Kaneb, Hood president and CFO, said in a statement. "We believe sustainability strengthens relationships and consumer trust, and we are committed to the environmental actions to help us achieve that vision."
While this is Hood’s first VPPA, the company has previously explored other energy projects in pursuit of its goal to support the U.S. dairy industry’s transition to carbon neutrality by 2050.. Hood has disclosed its annual emissions to the Carbon Disclosure Project, pursuing a 1.8 MW solar project in Massachusetts, installed a cogeneration plant, and made upgrades to its facility in Winchester, Va., to increase energy savings.
Hood plans to launch a new sustainability strategy this year to further optimize operations and increase renewable energy use to lower emissions and energy use.
In addition to wind capacity, the Azure Sky project features 137 MW of battery storage and should be operational in the first half of 2022.
