GE Targets Fully Net-Zero Operations and Product Use by 2050
General Electric announced in a new sustainability report its ambition to be carbon neutral in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and fully net-zero, including Scope 3 emissions from the use of its sold products, by 2050.
GE reported that its carbon neutrality goal will mostly be achieved through absolute reductions in direct emissions and energy use through operational investments, smart power sourcing, and waste elimination. In 2020, GE had reduced the carbon intensity of its power generation base by almost 20% since 2010 and reduced operational emissions by 21% since 2011.
The company reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions 40% through the use of advanced engine technology and Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which it plans to continue exploring the use of in the future. GE is pursuing projects to define industry standards for 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel in order to further reduce fuel consumption.
“We want to make sure that we’re always delivering the most efficient, the most advanced, and the most accessible technology to our customers for the benefit of improving the quality of life of people around the world,” Roger Martella, GE’s chief sustainability officer, said in a statement. “And while we are making sure to deliver the best technology today, we are also looking around the corner and investing in the breakthrough technologies of the future to achieve long-term success and sustainable outcomes.”
