Oregon City to Reduce Streetlight Energy Use 58% with LED Retrofit

The City of Sandy, Ore., is expecting to save $68,000 in energy costs thanks to a recently completed LED streetlight conversion.

The city completed the project with the help of Cree Lighting and believes the new lighting will reduce streetlight energy use by 58%. By switching to these light fixtures, the city regained power over the maintenance of its street lights away from the local utility, Portland General Electric.

By tracking the reduction in kilowatt-hours following the conversion, the city will receive $45,000 in rebates from Energy Trust of Oregon. Between these rebates and energy cost savings, the project should result in $720,000 in savings over the next ten years.

“By all accounts the project has been a great success,” Mike Walker, public works director for the City of Sandy, said in a statement. “Now that the new lamps have been installed and you can see the quality of the street lighting throughout the city, we know we made the right choice.”
