IVECO Uses New German Plant for EV Truck Development
IVECO and Nikola launched Sept. 15 a joint project for the manufacturing of electric heavy-duty trucks.
The Nikola Tre electric truck model will be produced at a new plant unveiled in Ulm, Germany using a modular fuel cell platform with battery propulsion technology and will be delivered for use to commercial vehicle company IVECO, of CNH Industrial. The plant is also developing the next generation of such a heavy-duty electric platform through a fuel cell electric vehicle model of the Nikola Tre.
The electric trucks are expected to begin being delivered to customers in the U.S. in 2022.
“Despite all the industry and global pandemic challenges we have been facing since we first announced this partnership in September 2019, it is extremely rewarding to be able to stand here today as a team and witness the execution of all of our hard work delivered on time and according to our original plans,” Gerrit Marx, president of Commercial & Specialty Vehicles at CNH Industrial and designated CEO of the Iveco Group, said at the opening of the facility. “Thanks to IVECO's proven expertise and established footprint we have provided a platform upon which Nikola's technology can thrive. Now our focus is on ensuring the success of this operation and jointly taking the lead when it comes to climate-neutral long- and short-haul heavy-duty transport.”
The new electric heavy-duty truck manufacturing facility is expected to be capable of manufacturing approximately 1,000 units per shift per year and will continue to increase in capacity.
