Salesforce Reaches Net-Zero Emissions Across Value Chain
Salesforce announced Sept. 21 that it has achieved net zero across its entire value chain and 100% renewable energy use in its operations.
The global CRM provider focused on six main areas to reach this goal: emissions reduction, carbon removal, trillion trees & ecosystem restoration, education & mobilization, innovation and regulation & policy. Salesforce released its full Climate Action Plan to act as a resource for others looking to achieve net-zero emissions.
Salesforce is on track to reduce its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 50% before 2030 and nearly 100% by 2040. Any remaining emissions were offset with renewable energy and carbon credit purchases, with the intention to use mainly removal credits in the long term.
Salesforce used its Sustainability Cloud platform to track its emissions in order to establish a strategy for reducing them. After this accomplishment, the company now released Sustainability Cloud 2.0 to help customers reach their own net zero targets by tracking and reducing emissions.
The company is also donating $1 million to tree-planting initiatives focusing on lower-income communities and disaster-affected areas.
“Climate change is one of the most pressing crises we face as a planet, and each one of us has a responsibility to help,” Marc Benioff, CEO and chair of Salesforce, said in a statement. “I’m proud that Salesforce is one of the few companies to have achieved Net Zero and 100% renewable energy, but we can’t stop until we embrace every solution and get every business on board. Together, we can sequester 100 gigatons of carbon by restoring, conserving or growing 1 trillion trees; energize an ecopreneur revolution to develop innovative climate solutions; and accelerate the Fortune 1000 to reach Net Zero.”
