DuPont Inks Deal for 135 MW from Texas Wind Project
DuPont announced Sept. 23 that it has entered into a VPPA for 135 MW of energy from a Texas wind farm.
The agreement was completed with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resource and will support the materials company with its goal of reducing absolute emissions by 30% and sourcing 60% renewable electricity by 2030. In the long term, the company is targeting carbon neutrality by 2050.
It is estimated that the Appaloosa Run Wind project will generate approximately 528,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually. The project will be built in Upton County, Texas, and is expected to be operational by the end of 2022.
“Through this VPPA, together with our 2020 actions, we will soon be sourcing the equivalent of approximately 25 percent of our total electricity needs today from renewable sources,” Miguel Gonzalez, chief procurement officer at DuPont, said in a statement. “Renewable energy is one part of an integrated climate and energy approach that will help us deliver our purpose of empowering the world with the essential innovations to thrive and move towards a more sustainable operation. We’re committed to managing our business to preserve the earth’s natural resources.”
In pursuit of its energy goals, DuPont has already converted its largest manufacturing site to a low-carbon energy source in 2019 and in 2020 completed nearly 100 energy-saving projects. The company also reduced its Scope 2 emissions by 11% between 2019 and 2020.
On Sept. 27, DuPont announced its intention to join the RE100 initiative and committed to working toward 100% renewable energy use.
