Alcoa Targets Net-Zero Aluminum Processing Operations
Alcoa Corporation announced Oct. 4 its new commitment to reaching net-zero emissions in its global operations by 2050.
The aluminum product manufacturer is also targeting a 30% reduction in direct and indirect emissions from its aluminum smelting and alumina refining operations by 2025 and a 50% reduction by 2030, compared to 2015 levels. The company plans to also grow the use of renewable energy at its facilities, where 75% of electricity use is currently powered by renewable sources.
“We’re proud of our commitment to responsible environmental, social, and governance practices, and this new endeavor is an extension of our ongoing efforts to reach a decarbonization pathway,” Roy Harvey, president and CEO at Alcoa, said in a statement. “We have been recognized for our environmental practices, and we are developing new technologies that will help us progress toward our net-zero ambition by 2050.”
Alcoa is also working on the development of technologies that would allow a reduction in emissions from its alumina refining process, such as a zero-carbon smelting process and mechanical vapor recompression. This particular innovation emits pure oxygen and eliminates the greenhouse gas emissions that usually come from molten aluminum processes. This carbon-free aluminum has already been sold for use by companies like Apple and Audi.
