Apple Doubles Suppliers Committed to 100% RE Use
Apple announced Oct. 27 that 175 of its suppliers plan to transition to 100% renewable energy, doubling the previous number of suppliers with such a commitment.
Between itself and its suppliers, the tech company expects to bring more than 9 GW of clean energy capacity online globally and avoid more than 18 million metric tons of CO2e annually. Apple will be adding 10 new projects to its Power for Impact initiative focused on installing clean energy projects in under-resourced communities around the world.
“Every company should be a part of the fight against climate change, and together with our suppliers and local communities, we’re demonstrating all of the opportunity and equity green innovation can bring,” CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. “We’re acting with urgency, and we’re acting together. But time is not a renewable resource, and we must act quickly to invest in a greener and more equitable future.”
Apple’s Supplier Clean Energy Program has now been joined by 19 U.S. suppliers, 19 European suppliers, 50 Chinese suppliers, and 31 suppliers between India, Japan, and South Korea.
The support of its suppliers will help Apple with the pursuit of its target to be carbon neutral across its supply chain and products by 2030. The company has already achieved carbon neutrality in its own global operations and reduced its carbon emissions by 40% over the past five years.
