Nokia Targets 100% RE Use, Calls for Digitalization of Industry
Nokia announced Nov. 12 a new ambition to power its facilities with 100% renewable electricity and support the digitalization of the highest-emitting sectors of the global economy.
The tech company aims to power its offices, R&D labs, and factories by 2025 in order to reach its goal of reducing emissions by 50% across its value chain by 2030. Nokia is also advocating for the digitalization of industries like energy, agriculture, manufacturing and health to make processes more efficient, reduce waste and increase productivity.
Nokia use its time at the COP26 conference to urge political, business, and civil society leaders to accelerate the use of green technology as a way to achieve net zero goals.
“There is no green without digital. Only 30% of the world’s economy is currently digitalized, and we must now work to connect the remaining 70% to ensure the world can reach net zero,” President and CEO Pekka Lundmark said in a statement. “5G and related technologies play a critical role in making other industries more sustainable. At the same time, the ICT industry needs to minimize its footprint and accelerate the use of green electricity.”
Nokia’s commitments were approved by the Science Based Targets initiative and focus heavily on product energy efficiency considering that 90% of its emissions come from consumer use of its products.
