Global Energy Storage Market Set to Hit One Terawatt-Hour by 2030 (BloombergNEF) Energy storage installations[1] around the world will reach a cumulative 358 gigawatts/1,028 gigawatt-hours by the end of 2030, more than twenty times larger than the 17 gigawatts/34 gigawatt-hours online at the end of 2020, according to the latest forecast from research company BloombergNEF (BNEF). This boom in stationary energy storage will require more than $262 billion of investment, BNEF estimates. BloombergNEF’s 2021 Global Energy Storage Outlook estimates that 345 gigawatts/999 gigawatt-hours of new energy storage capacity will be added globally between 2021 and 2030, which is more than Japan’s entire power generation capacity in 2020.
It’s Time to Be Honest About Fossil Fuels’ Role in Energy Transition (Foreign Policy) The global energy crisis has hit U.S. shores: Fuel prices are rising, and a global supply shortage of natural gas is driving up the cost of heat and electricity as winter approaches. The Biden administration, worried that rising energy prices could cost votes and kneecap its ability to implement policies, has begged OPEC to pump more oil and Russia to step up gas supplies to Europe. At the same time, the Republicans have no useful energy policy alternative on offer. The United States needs a fundamentally new energy policy that will deliver reliable energy supplies at affordable prices with low impact on the environment and climate.

Fashion's climate goals have a funding problem (Vogue Business) The fashion industry cannot meet its COP26 climate commitments, nor can brands meet their individual goals to decarbonise, if they don’t address the major lack of funding needed to overhaul the supply chain, experts say. The industry is at least $1 trillion short of the total investment needed to decarbonise the industry by 2050, according to a Fashion for Good and Apparel Impact Institute report to be released next week and seen by Vogue Business. While brands are not responsible for putting up all or even most of that money, the report argues, they should be offering up some of it, and have a significant role to play in unlocking much of the rest of it. Yet brands are not doing enough of either, according to the authors.
