Westlake Pursues 20% Emissions Cut

Westlake Corporation announced Feb. 21 that it plans to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions per ton of production by 20% between 2016 and 2030.

The materials manufacturer and supplier also intend to invest in new technologies and projects that focus on energy efficiency, sourcing less carbon-intensive electricity, and adding more hydrogen as a fuel gas in its operations. Westlake will continue reporting its sustainability metrics during 2022 using a framework informed by the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures and the Global Reporting Initiative.

“Westlake has been lowering carbon intensity every year through our continuous improvement efforts and capital investments,” Albert Chao, Westlake president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “As a manufacturer of essential products that enhance people’s lives every day, we are committed to innovating more sustainable products and producing them in a more sustainable fashion.”

Westlake has recently been incorporating sustainability into its business and its operations and in 2021 introduced new products like lower-emission caustic soda and lower-emission PVC pipes. The company is also trialing a “one-pellet solution,” which incorporates post-consumer resin that could be used in everyday performance applications like packaging or trash bags.
