U.S. Military Supplier Explores EV Conversion Technology
A supplier for the U.S. military will soon be joining a project to design and produce new technology that could convert military vehicles to electric models.
The supplier signed a collaborative agreement with Atlis Motor Vehicles for the project to design, develop and manufacture a fully electric XP platform for Class 1-2, light- to medium-duty trucks.. Under the agreement, the technology produced through the partnership to support the conversion to electric vehicles will be able to be sold to third-party customers, including the U.S. government and international allies.
The XP platform converts a traditional internal combustion engine vehicle to an EV using a plug-and-play setup model. The standard XP platform consists of two identical modular drive systems located in the front and rear of the vehicle, four traction motors, independent suspension, drive-by-wire technology and an ATLIS battery pack. The use of this technology will assist the Department of Defense in its goal to transform its fleet of ground vehicles into electric and hybrid-electric models.
“We've always said that anyone who does work should be able to do it in an electric vehicle, without any compromises,” Mark Hanchett, CEO of Atlis Motor Vehicles, said in a statement. “This also applies to the men and women of the U.S. military. The XP platform is the basis to create a variety of emissions-free vehicles that can achieve the same performance characteristics of petroleum-powered products needed by the armed forces.”
