MetLife Sets 2050 Goal
MetLife commits to achieve net zero GHG emissions across the company’s global operations and general account investment portfolio by 2050 or sooner.
The net zero pledge builds upon MetLife’s existing 2030 sustainability commitments, which include 11 climate goals established in 2020, as well as a robust set of 2030 DEI commitments established in March 2022. The financial components of the DEI commitments total more than $2.5 billion by 2030.
The insurance company reduced GHG emissions by 21% between 2020 and 2021, originated over $6 billion in new green investments and maintained carbon neutrality, which MetLife has done since 2016.
Details were provided in Metlife’s annual Sustainability Report.
“Our purpose – always with you, building a more confident future – is central to our business strategy and is at the heart of our sustainability mission,” said MetLife President and CEO Michel Khalaf in a statement. “For MetLife, the path to a more confident future is clear: We will apply the breadth of our resources to building a more inclusive and equitable society, advancing economic opportunity, creating a healthier planet, and enhancing the health and well-being of all people.”
