Williams College Launches Emissions Program for Air Travel
Williams College launched its Air Travel Greenhouse Gas Emissions Information & Reduction Program, an initiative directed at reducing carbon emissions from College-related air travel.
The program was started on Oct. 1., according to an article in The Williams Record.
Travelers who booked travel using College funds will now receive monthly emails from the Zilkha Center for Environmental Initiatives with information about the GHG gas emissions from their flights, estimated climate damages as a result of the emissions, and strategies to reduce future emissions due to air travel, according to an email sent by Provost Eiko Maruko Siniawer and Zilkha Center Director Tanja Srebotnjak.
The program was developed for over two years by the Campus Environmental Advisory Committee (CEAC) — a group of both faculty and students developed the program over two years.
“This final version of the program reflects CEAC’s efforts to bring attention to the importance of reducing our emissions from air travel and concerns expressed by many faculty that a punitive approach would impinge on central aspects of the College’s intellectual and academic mission,” Siniawer wrote.
The College’s 2021 Strategic Plan includes “reducing travel emissions through reduced vehicle and air miles and improved vehicle fleet efficiency.”
Air travel made up 63% of Scope 3 emissions in 2021 and 5% of the College’s emissions overall, according to the College’s annual emissions report.
