FedEx Express Canada To Transform Fleet Into Electric
FedEx Express Canada seeks to transform its vehicles to be all-electric, zero-tailpipe emissions vehicles by 2030.
The delivery company set the target for the FedEx parcel pickup and delivery (PUD) fleet to be carbon neutral globally by 2040.
FedEx Express plans for 50% of its global PUD vehicle purchases to be electric by 2025, rising to 100% by 2030.
In 2020, FedEx Express Canada began electrifying its pickup and delivery fleet with the launch of an electric cargo bike (e-bike) pilot in Toronto.
The company is also building charging infrastructure across its Canadian facilities in addition to the 80 charging stations that were installed to prepare for the delivery of its first electric delivery vans in the coming months.
“At FedEx, we see things from a bird’s-eye view, which gives us insight into the impact we have on the world,” said Dean Jamieson, vice president of operations at FedEx Express Canada, in a statement. “But we also look out from our front steps and know that the work we do has a significant impact on our communities, benefits the environment and provides a higher quality of life for all Canadians.”
The low-emission e-bikes have traveled more than 50,000 kilometers and have averted 14 tons of CO₂
FedEx is also researching the use of alternative fuels, aircraft modernization, fuel-saving programs, and carbon capture solutions. In Canada, FedEx recently completed the transition of its fleet of B727 aircraft to B757s, which provide 20% more payload capacity and are up to 36% more fuel efficient.
