Playoff Green Achieves Climate Goals for Championship

Playoff Green revealed its progress on climate goals, including offsetting 100% of all electricity, local transportation, onsite fuels, waste, food and beverage procurement, and energy from water. The company used carbon offsets, renewable energy certificates (RECs), as well as solar energy and energy efficiency enhancements to achieve this result.

These accomplishments are detailed in its 2023 Playoff Green Impact Report. Playoff Green is the sustainability program of the College Football Playoff.

"We are proud to have been able to continue to reduce the environmental impact of our national championship event," said Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the College Football Playoff, in a statement.  "Just like the success on the field, the efforts to constantly raise the bar on our sustainability efforts around our game took teamwork.  We are thankful for the efforts of the Green Sports Alliance, the Los Angeles Host Committee, and, of course, the thousands of fans who traveled to the game and took part in all the wonderful activities."

At the Los Angeles Convention Center, the company installed a 2.21-megawatt solar array that brings the total solar output to 2.58 megawatts, making it the largest solar array on a convention center in the US.

All 3,629 MTCDE of verified offsets came from the following projects:

• Capricorn Ridge Wind Farm in Texas features 75 GE 1.5 MW wind turbines with a capacity of 112.5 MW. The towers have a rated wind speed of 12 m/s, three rotor blades, a rotor diameter of 77 meters, and a rotor speed of 10.1-20.4 rpm.
• Las Pizarras Project in Peru, which provides hydroelectric power. The total capacity will be 18 MW, with an electricity generation potential of 103.32 GWh per year. The project is expected to mitigate the emission of 68,132 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) per year.

Additionally, the company acquired 1,993 California RECs from the following hydroelectric water plants: Trinity Powerplant, Shasta Powerplant, Long Lake HED, and Cabinet Gorge HED.

Playoff Green also has the goal to energize fans around environmental causes, by teaching them to act on climate change and critical socio-environmental challenges in their communities.
