Syensqo Receives SBTi Approval

Belgian materials company Syensqo announced it achieved validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its 2030 GHG emission reduction targets.

Syensqo seeks to lower its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% compared to its 2021 level by 2030 and also committed to reduce its Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25% in the same time frame.

“Achieving SBTi validation is a testament to our commitment to climate, sustainability and innovation. At Syensqo, we are explorers pursuing scientific breakthroughs that contribute to a more sustainable and resilient world. Our validated 2030 targets reflect our dedication to reducing GHG emissions in our operations and value chain. We are proud to lead the way in decarbonization of the industry with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2040,” said Ilham Kadri, CEO Of Syensqo, in a statement.

Syensqo’s 2030 ambition is in line with a 1.5°C trajectory. The company also seeks to achieve carbon neutrality of its Scope 1 and 2 by 2040 with reducing emissions by at least 80% compared to 2021 and compensating residual, hard-to-abate emissions with high-integrity credits.

To achieve progress on its Scope 3 emissions reduction, the company is launching a climate pledge targeting a mutual agreement with its top 70 suppliers at minimum, which account for 80% of the group’s GHG emissions from raw materials purchased. The goal is to create more sustainable value chains across its markets.

Through the pledge, Syensqo’s suppliers will commit to play a key partner role in Syensqo’s decarbonization efforts by setting up a roadmap and milestones to reduce the carbon footprint of their products and operations.
