Lipton Teas and Infusions' Goals Approved by SBTi

Lipton Teas and Infusions, a large tea company, announced that its GHG emissions were independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Based on the latest climate science, the company is targeting net zero GHG emissions across its value chain by 2040.

The full set of validated targets, compared to a 2021 baseline, are:

Energy and Industry:

  •  Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 49.1% by 2030 and 90% by 2040
  •  Reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 and 90% by 2040

Forest land and agriculture (FLAG):

  •  Reduce absolute Scope 3 FLAG GHG emissions 30.3% by 2030 and 72% by 2040
  • No deforestation across Lipton Teas and Infusions’ primary deforestation-linked commodities, with a target date of 31 December 2025

“Tea has the lowest carbon footprint of any drink after tap water but, as a nature dependent business, we must show that real progress is possible and Inspire others to take action,” said Gareth Mead, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer at Lipton Teas and Infusions, in a statement. Our plans are ambitious but robust but backed by the latest science. This validation from the SBTI is encouragement that we are on the right track, and we are eager to help others - in our value chain and Beyond - to make their own science-based commitments.”
