Wilmar Receives SBTi Approval

Agribusiness company Wilmar International Limited announced that its near- and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

This milestone underscores Wilmar’s commitment to science-driven climate action and aligns with global efforts to combat climate change.

“Our SBTi-approved targets reflect Wilmar’s steadfast dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in a meaningful and science-aligned manner,” said Jeremy Goon, Chief Sustainability Officer of Wilmar, in a statement. “As a leading global agribusiness, we recognize the urgency of climate action and are actively integrating sustainability into every aspect of our global operations to drive real impact. We also encourage our peers and stakeholders to align with climate science and commit to setting science-based net-zero targets.”

The Group’s approved targets validated under the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard and the SBTi Forest, Land, and Agriculture (FLAG) Guidance include absolute reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as Scope 3 emissions related to its supply chain.

For the energy and industry sector, Wilmar has committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50.4% by 2032 from a 2022 base year. In addition, the company will lower  absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions — covering purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, and the processing of sold products — by 30% within the same timeframe.

In the long term, Wilmar will continue to implement these reductions, aiming to achieve a 90% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050, as well as a 90% absolute reduction in Scope 3 emissions — covering all the aforementioned categories along with downstream transportation and distribution.

Under the SBTi FLAG Guidance, Wilmar has also pledged to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 3 FLAG GHG emissions by 36.4% by 2032 from a 2022 base year. By 2050, the Group aims to achieve a 72% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 3 FLAG GHG emissions. Wilmar remains committed to transparency and will report on its progress in accordance with SBTi requirements and global best practices.
