CLEAResult, looking to target C&I customers, acquires industrial utility services business
Marking further consolidation in the energy services industry, efficiency program developer CLEAResult on June 9 announced it would acquire the industrial utility services business unit of EnerNOC in an attempt to bolster its commercial and industrial capabilities.
CLEAResult’s current business designs and implements technology-enabled energy efficiency programs for utilities, governments schools and businesses; EnerNOC had said earlier in the year that it was looking to sell its industrial utility services business segment, a move industry observers have pinned to the difficulty of selling software to utilities, which have historically been slow to adopt new technologies.
With the acquisition, the company said in a news release, CLEAResult aims to provide customized services for large commercial and industrial electricity customers. The company wrote:
For many utilities, commercial and industrial customers present an untapped potential market for energy efficiency savings. Yet, many large commercial and industrial customers elect to opt out of traditional utility programs because of a lack of options that meet their specific needs. This segment faces an increasingly complicated energy efficiency landscape, and a one-size-fits-all approach does not meet its energy objectives.
CLEAResult already runs more than 370 commercial and industrial programs across the country. The expansion, it says, will strengthen its ability to provide end-to-end program design, outreach, onsite assessments, measure reporting and qualification, project management support and verification services that serve the unique needs of a wide range of industrial facilities. The investment will also increase CLEAResult’s capabilities in demand response and customized energy efficiency services to energy intensive industrial sectors such as food processing, oil and gas production, chemical manufacturing and light manufacturing.
"In this particular space, a utility's customers are looking for reliable and persistent energy efficiency programs that lead to cost-effective savings and address the unique challenges they face," CLEAResult CEO Aziz Virani said in a statement. "CLEAResult can now offer our utility clients customized, unmatched services for their commercial and industrial customers who have been hard to engage with traditional energy efficiency programs."
The company said EnerNOC's former industrial utility services business unit employees are joining CLEAResult and will remain in California.
