Arby's reports 15% energy use reduction since 2011
In its first-ever corporate sustainability report, from 2011 to 2016.
The fast-food chain, which has been an active participant with the Department of Energy's Better Buildings Initiative, says it developed a three-tiered plan for approaching energy efficiency based on the results of an energy audit conducted in partnership with Ecova. The three tiers are no-cost and low-cost improvements as well as long-term investments in energy efficiency.
"Our path to becoming an industry leader in energy reduction began in 2012 when research into cutting costs and streamlining operations across our company-owned restaurant portfolio uncovered opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint," Arby's Chief Operating Officer John Bowie wrote in the report. "Later that year, following additional research, we launched Efficiency
Matters, the backbone of Arby’s ResourceFULL pillar. Efficiency Matters is a program that helped us define our path to environmental stewardship, packaged in a way that allowed each restaurant management team to apply learnings and tools to maximize their savings."
Arby's said its no-cost initiatives are behavior-based improvements at the restaurant level that include things like energy rebate management and hot water temperature controls. Low-cost initiatives include things likes a toaster damper kit, which provides insulation to retain heat used during toaster operation, and electronically commutated motors used with walk-in coolers and freezers.
