Ohio businesses save $500k+ in energy costs

A group of Ohio businesses and organizations have realized collective savings of more than $500,000 from energy reductions through a joint environmental program sponsored by a public-private sustainability organization.

Dayton Regional Green, a sustainability group formed out of a task force created by Montgomery County, Ohio, in 2007,  alongside electric and natural gas utilities Dayton Power & Light and Vectren, on Oct. 13 recognized participating local businesses and organizations and announced the winners of a yearlong "Bring Your Green Challenge." The challenge encouraged more than 100 buildings and offices competed to reduce their environmental impact and save energy and resources while engaging their employees.

By deploying energy efficient, and sustainable practices, Bring Your Green participants realized collective savings of $534,000 from energy reduction, prevented the release of 5,100 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere and diverted more than 17,000 tons of waste from landfills, according to a news release.

Winners included Reed Elsevier and LexisNexis and HVAC contractor Waibel Energy Systems.
