Barcardi details efficiency, clean energy efforts
Bacardi Ltd., which calls itself the world's largest privately held spirits company, credits the energy use reduction initiatives taken throughout its operations as key driver to accomplishing its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 50%.
The Bermuda-based company, whose portfolio comprises more than 200 brands and labels including Bacardí rum, Grey Goose vodka and Dewar's blended Scotch whiskey, said Nov. 15 that it reached that goal more than a year ahead of schedule, touting the hundreds of energy reduction initiatives implemented globally at its distilleries, bottling lines, visitor centers and offices. The company said the goal was laid out as part of its sustainability plan, "Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future."
"From operations to improved energy efficiencies, every area was addressed, including lighting, motors, HVAC and compressed air systems," the company said in a news release. "Further, continuous audits ensured real gains, which helped refine methods and accelerate the GHG reductions achieved."
The company has also been ramping up its use of renewable energy globally, with a specific focus on wind turbines and heat recovery systems at operations sites:
Additionally, reduce the amount of fuel needed for reliable, cleaner energy. Instead of oil, renewable organic material, such as wood pellets and chips, and agave fibers leftover from the production of the company's premium brands is used as fuel for the biomass boilers. As a model of sustainability, the refurbished Cazadores facility in Mexico is 100% biomass fueled, with 0% of its waste deposited in landfills.
Bacardi said it plans to set new targets in alignment with the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted in Paris late last year, and supporting the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals. On Nov. 16, more than 300 businesses reaffirmed their support for U.S. participating in the Paris climate agreement in a letter addressed to president-elect Donald Trump.
