SC Johnson hits 33% green power use globally
Since 2000, S.C. Johnson & Son has slashed greenhouse gas emissions from its worldwide factories by nearly 52%, partially attributable to an increase in the use of renewable energy sources.
The privately held manufacturer of household cleaning supplies and other chemicals said in its 2016 sustainability report that now has 10 renewable energy initiatives globally that account for about 33% of its total energy use. In the U.S., S.C. Johnson said two onsite wind turbines and two cogeneration systems provide 100%, on average, of the electricity needs for its largest manufacturing plant.
"We also have a wind turbine at our Netherlands manufacturing location and solar panels in China, we purchase wind power in Michigan, Netherlands and Mexico, and we convert food waste into a fuel source in Indonesia," the company's report reads.
S.C. Johnson also touted its recognition by the U.S. EPA's Green Power Partners program for being in the top 100 list of the greenest power users. In the most recent Green Power Partners ranking, S.C. Johnson ranked 78th, using more than 78 million kWh of green power annually, representing 44% of its U.S. energy use.
