Arena lighting retrofit to yield $1.3M in savings
The American Airlines Center near Dallas recently completed a lighting retrofit plan that is expected to reduce the arena's energy consumption by 66% percent, resulting in $1.26 million over the lifetime of the project.
The sports and entertainment arena overhauled its original parking garage lighting system, which included 150-watt high-pressure sodium and 175-watt halide fixtures, replacing them with LED luminaires from Cree Inc., according to a Jan. 26 news release from the lighting company. In addition to generating savings, Cree said the new lighting enhances the security, safety and comfort of arena visitors.
The arena is home to the NBA's Dallas Mavericks and the NHL's Dallas Stars.
"American Airlines Center has set the precedent for superior sporting and live entertainment events in the area since 2001," American Airlines Center master electrician Leroy Juel said in a statement. "The fan experience begins and ends in a parking garage for us, so the lighting has to look fantastic, perform exceptionally and enhance the feeling of safety and security in the space."
The LED lighting installed by the arena was designed to address challenges specific to parking garages, and features uniformity, high efficiency, precise control and design appeal, according to the release.
