Las Vegas Sands marks 17% energy use reduction

Following the implementation of a series of energy efficiency upgrades through its properties, Las Vegas Sands Corp. has reduced its energy consumption by 17% in a five-year period.

In receiving recognition from the U.S. DOE for its efforts in energy and water efficiency, which have included projects at The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo and Convention Center, the agency said the company has cut its usage by more than 500 million kBtu between 2011 and 2016. Las Vegas Sands has committed to achieving a 20% portfoliowide energy savings in 10 years through the DOE's Better Buildings initiative.

In The Venetian and The Palazzo guest suites, Las Vegas Sands achieved an estimated 8 million kWh in electricity savings annually by upgrading guest room appliances, installing 100% LED lighting in each room. At the Sands Expo and Convention Center, the company began installing a wireless lighting control system while upgrading its exhibit halls to LED lights, which has saved approximately 3.1 million kWh in electricity use per year.

More details on the company's projects and strategy are available from the DOE. Across its entire portfolio of properties worldwide, Las Vegas Sands completed 84 different energy efficiency projects in 2016, which it estimates will save more than 31 million kWh of electricity use, according to its most recent sustainability report

Through the Better Buildings Challenge, the Energy Department is partnering with more than 345 private businesses and public-sector organizations to achieve 20% portfolio-wide energy savings and share successful strategies that maximize efficiency over the next decade. Since the Challenge launched in 2011, partners have shared more than 1,000 solutions, saved 240 trillion Btu, and cut an estimated $1.9 billion in energy costs.
