Atlanta cuts energy use ahead of 2020 goal
The city of Atlanta reached its 2020 energy reduction goal a year ahead of schedule, a big milestone in its long-term goal to transition to 100% clean energy by 2035.
Through the city’s Better Buildings Challenge, launched in 2011, Atlanta cut the energy use in more than 450 buildings by 20.3%, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported Oct. 28. This was a goal originally set for 2020.
"Energy is at the core of economic activity in Atlanta," Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms told the publication. "When done thoughtfully, a transition to clean energy yields large payoffs for communities."
The energy cut happened across a total of more than 115 million square feet of space among participating city buildings, including offices, municipal buildings, K-12 schools, universities and hotels.
According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the city’s government was the first to enroll in the national Better Buildings Challenge program, alongside other Atlanta participants including Southface Energy Institute, Central Atlanta Progress, the Midtown Alliance and Livable Buckhead.
