New Mexico to assess energy efficiency of leased office buildings
The state of New Mexico will begin to evaluate the environmental efforts and energy efficiency of buildings who are leasing office space, including recycling programs, eco-friendly cleaning products or the installation of solar power.
The Durango Herald reported Jan. 2 that the initiative, being implemented by the General Services Department, requests that prospective property managers list eco-friendly attributes of their space with their applications. The first proposal was issued on Dec. 23 and seeks temporary office space for the Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources.
“Climate change is here, and GSD is committed to being a leader in state government’s efforts to reduce its contribution to our warming climate,” Secretary Ken Ortiz told The Durango Herald.
As part of the initiative, the Wendell Chino Building, where the state energy department lives, will be undergoing energy-efficiency and solar power renovation through a $32 million project that will include around 30 executive buildings in Santa Fe. The Chino building will also be receiving what will be the state government’s first solar battery storage system.
