GM accelerates sustainability commitments
General Motors announced the acceleration of their previous sustainability commitments this week, with a new goal to source renewable energy 10 years earlier than originally stated.
The automaker updated their goal to source 100% of global operation electricity from renewable sources, which was previously set at 2050, to a new target of 2040. Additionally, the company committed to power 100% of their U.S. facilities with renewable energy by 2030.
GM's sustainability goals apply to their supply chain as well. In this new set of commitments, GM says they will partner with suppliers to ensure that at least 50% of the materials used in their vehicles will be sustainable by 2030.
The final goal outlined by GM is to develop a National Zero Emission Vehicle program to facilitate the country's acceleration toward an all-electric fleet.
"In 2018, we accelerated our transformation to position the company for long-term success in a rapidly changing world," Mary Barra, chairman and CEO, said in a July 2019 statement about their 2018 sustainability report. As we continue to strengthen our core business, we are placing smart bets on technologies that will drive a future that is electric, autonomous, connected and shared."
