Rolls-Royce joins UN carbon campaign to become net zero by 2030
Rolls-Royce announced June 5 that they have joined the UN Race to Zero campaign and expect to become net-zero carbon in their operations by 2030.
As part of this commitment and intention to align their goals with the Paris agreement, the engineering company plans to use their technology to help industries like aviation, shipping, rail and power generation become net-zero carbon by 2050. This will include investing in research and development and pursuing technology for engine efficiency and low carbon alternative fuels, building a small modular nuclear power station and pursuing the electrification of flight.
Other interim goals include developing hybrid-electric systems for the rail and marine markets, delivering microgrid solutions to provide resiliency and achieving net-zero emissions in their own operations and facilities by 2030 through the use of 100% renewable energy and microgrid capabilities.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has brought immediate and obvious pressures to our industry and to us as a company, but the long-term challenges our world faces have not gone away,” CEO Warren East said in a statement. “The world on the other side of this pandemic will need the power that we generate to fuel economic recovery. I absolutely believe the call for that power to be more sustainable and net zero will be stronger than ever. Answering that call is a big, complex challenge and few companies on the planet are better placed than Rolls-Royce to help. We will use our capabilities to play a leading role in enabling the vital sectors in which we operate to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. I believe this ambition will drive our competitiveness for the future.”
