Kimberly-Clark cuts Scope 1 and 2 emissions 34.7%
Kimberly-Clark announced July 8 that they achieved a 34.7% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions between 2005 and 2019 and are on track to achieve their 40% reduction target by 2022.
The consumer products manufacturer released their 2019 Global Sustainability Report, in which they reported they are also still pursuing a reduction of the carbon footprint of their operations and supply chain by 50% for absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from their operations. They also are committed to reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from purchased and services and end of life treatment of sold products by 20%.
All of their emissions reduction goals have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative and are in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
The company also has a goal to reduce their Natural (Northern) Forest Fiber footprint by 50% by 2025 through the use of sustainably sourced fibers like plantation-grown wood, alternative non-wood and recycled fibers.
Kimberly-Clark had a total of eight alternative and renewable energy projects by the end of 2019, which provided emissions savings of 130,000 MTCO2e. Starting in late 2020, a second Texas wind project will deliver 640,000 MWh annually through a VPPA and will account for 100% of the electricity purchased by our family care manufacturing facilities in North America.
They have also implemented projects such as LED lighting retrofits, compressed air systems improvement, automation of the drying section on tissue assets, replacement of low-efficiency vacuum generation technology and installation of variable frequency drives in process pumps and fans to increase their energy efficiency.
"Kimberly-Clark's continued commitment to doing the right thing underpins our social impact and smallest footprint ambitions," Lisa Morden, Vice President of Safety, Sustainability and Occupational Health at Kimberly-Clark, said in a statement. "Living our purpose begins with ensuring the health and safety of our customers, consumers, and employees, promoting diversity and inclusion within our business, and protecting the rights of workers across our supply chain. These are essential to our ambitions."
