Sony sets 2025 energy targets
Sony Corporation released Sept. 10 their “Green Management 2025” plan, which includes medium-term targets to serve as milestones along their path toward a zero environmental footprint by 2050.
These intermediary targets will be applicable from FY 2021 through FY 2025. More specifically, Sony is targeting an increase to 15% of their electricity coming from renewable sources and to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 5% compared to FY 2020 through energy management and expanding renewable energy.
Overall, the tech company is targeting 100% renewable electricity by 2040; European business sites have already achieved this milestone, while those in China are expected to reach 100% in FY 2020 and those in North America should achieve it by 2030. The company plans to reduce annual energy consumption by 5% by 2025.
The four major focus areas of Sony’s “Green Management 2025” are:
- Reduce the amount of plastic and energy used by products
- Measures against climate change, such as expanding the use of renewable energy at manufacturing sites
- Enhance engagement with raw material and component suppliers and contractors along the supply chain
- Strengthen efforts, particularly in the entertainment business, to raise awareness of sustainability issues
