Ferrero to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50%
Ferrero announced Oct. 21 that it plans to reduce end-to-end greenhouse gas emissions by 43% per ton of product before 2030.
The Italian confectionery company’s overall emissions reduction target is accompanied by a separate target to reduce all the emissions from its Scope 1 and 2 operations by 50% before 2030. Both targets use 2018 as a base year.
The company’s new targets were outlined in its newly released Sustainability Report, which includes updates on its “Care for the Better” campaign. In order to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, Ferrero plans to target emissions in its plants, warehouses and main offices, while it will work with suppliers to reduce Scope 3 emissions as well.
“As we approach the end of 2020, we are defining a new strategy and commitments to ensure we tackle the sustainability risks and opportunities that are most pertinent to our growing business,” Giovanni Ferrero, Executive Chairman of the Ferrero Group, said in a statement. “In our new report, we provide a first glimpse of our new strategic sustainability priorities, including our new climate goal towards 2030. I look forward to communicating further developments and progress against the new strategy as we enter an exciting new period of our Company history.”
In 2019, Ferrero self-generated 48% of the electricity used in its operations and installed more solar panels on plants in Mexico, Italy, Australia and Brazil, accounting for more than 500 kW of added power capacity.
To achieve its energy consumption reductions, the company has focused on more technical energy efficiency projects, such as LED lighting, optimizing energy production units and installing high-efficiency energy meters.
