Black & Veatch commits to carbon neutrality in five years
Black & Veatch announced Nov. 12 that it is committed to carbon neutrality by 2025 and to aligning its sustainability path with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The engineering and construction company recently disclosed its intention to end its participation in coal-based power design and construction and to begin focusing on clean energy technologies and helping clients transition to net zero. It launched the IgniteX program, which will accelerate partnerships with clean technology startups and enable clients to use clean energy technologies like hydrogen power at scale.
Black & Veatch intends to achieve its own carbon goals and assist its clients with theirs by increasing the number of electric vehicles use in its operations, increasing renewable energy use for lower operational costs and increased resiliency and working with a U.S. electric utility on its transition to hydrogen-based energy.
“Black & Veatch’s Sustainability Pledges reinforce our commitment to the betterment of society and mark a new chapter in our sustainability journey. Our efforts to align more closely with the UN SDGs are driven by a responsibility to operate more sustainably while also recognizing our greatest opportunity to contribute is through the work we do for our clients around the world,” Steve Edwards, Black & Veatch’s CEO, said in a statement. “The engineering and construction industry is ideally positioned to help communities around the world achieve their sustainability goals by embracing technology and innovation, from design through construction and decommissioning.”
